Game Testing!

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, its finally week 11 which means we are almost at the finish line! Its been a long semester I can tell you that much! I know its only Sunday but as I am sitting here building more of my world I thought it would also be a good idea to do the reading before Tuesday as it then gives me an extra hour on Tuesday to do something else!  Anyway this week I am reading an article called  Giving Criticism- The good, the bad, the ugly! I really enjoyed reading this article and I found it very relate able, for instance when the author talked about how when you say you don't like something it could end up in an argument it is so true, I always find when it happens to me I'm like please do not ask me for my option if you do not want me to be 100% honest with you! You have to be able to talk criticism without being offended as we are just giving our honest option!. Constructive criticism  offers valid feedback which is both positive...

Game Stories

Morning Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be talking about game stories from two different articles I have read. The first article was called  Into The Woods: A Practical Guide To The Hero Journey.  By Bob Bates. In this article Bob Bates explains to us how a hero's journey is very important within a game as myths are important, he explains that myths convey the values of society, they teach us who we are and how we should behave, they are a guide for our actions, they aren't just dusty old books. Myths are influenced by Moral Values, Mysteries of Life and Death, Communities and Personal Identity. Bob goes on to explain that myths are wired into all of us, they drive humanity to carry on because without them we would easily fall into madness causing us to suffer from depression and other mental illnesses.  I found this article to be very interesting, I liked how he compared our myths to the myths within a game and he referenced lots of different books...

Week 9 Reading & Writing

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, as it is week 9 of the semester we are now half way through - isn't that bloody crazy! Feels like is was only September yesterday 😓 but I am going to talk about how I think i'm getting on in this module so far while trying to juggle everything else this year keeps throwing at me! So here goes..... Overall I am really enjoying reading different articles, I haven't missed any of the readings yet as I have been trying my best to keep up to date with them. I have enjoyed some of them but being dyslexic reading is like my worst nightmare, I always have to read it twice to understand exactly whats the person is trying to explain so that is very time consuming but the one thing these readings have me doing is actually reading... I never read, I always put it off as I find it difficult so even though it takes some time I am enjoying it. The reading which I most enjoyed was probably one of the first readings I done in this module which wa...

Game Fun! :)

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be talking about an article I read  http://mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm .  In this article I learnt about MUD, "MUD" is a multi player real-time virtual world that is text based. Mud combine five different elements such as hack and slash, player versus player, role playing game, online chat and interactive fiction. In this article I also learnt about the history of MUD and the different games that used MUD years ago.   In this article Richard Bartle divides players into four categories. The first category is  Achievers V Achievers:  What he means by this is achievers are very competitive, sometimes its in a friendly nature but it can be very cut throat. They want to master the game and take pride in their process.  The second category is Achievers V Explorers: Achievers tend to say that explorers are losers, they say this because some of these people tinker with the game m...

My Game Decisions

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog! Today I will be talking about  Lost Garden   In this article I learnt about MMO which is making a multiplayer game online. This article is very very detailed and took a while to read and know exactly what they were talking about. From this I got the understanding behind the process on making a multiplayer game. Each game that is made and sold on the market has to take into consideration about multiplayer as it can have technical issues. This article made me realize that maybe having a game that includes many different players is not always a positive. One main factor to multiplayer games is friendships. When playing games with friends you want to be on the same team or against one another. When forming a friendship there are 4 aspects which are important. They are Proximity, Similarity, Reciprocity and Disclosure. I've learnt that in games its important to understand these ingredients because without them the players will unlikely ...

Games GDD

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog. Today I will be talking about Game GDD. Game GDD is "Game Design Document" . The first article I read was  Design Considerations . I found this article very interesting as he talked about features my game might need.  https://www.filamentgames.com/blog/writing-game-design-document-your-team-can-actually-use/ Components: In the article he explains that the design of components can go a long way, this means they can determine how much of a game is enjoyed which is very important as nobody would play a game if they didn't enjoy it. The Box: The box is a very important part as its all about the design on the cover of the game. The box has to look inviting to a consumer to make them want to buy it. Its all about first impressions.  Cards: This function does not apply to my game as I will not be adding the use of cards.  Theme:  The theme has to work within the game and should work with the rules rathe...

Game MDA

Hi Guys,  Welcome back to my blog! Today I will be talking about MDA.  What is MDA you ask? Well I hadn't a clue before doing today's reading which I found very interesting. I found this weeks reading very hard to get stuck into as it was a video but in the end I got there! M= Mechanics D= Dynamics  A= Aesthetics Mechanics are the rules of video games. Every single video game ever made has to have rules as that is what makes a game operate and function properly.  Dynamics is how the rules come into motion when you are playing the game.  Aesthetics is a very very important part of a game. These are not visual elements but they are about the players experience such as is the game "fun, boring, interesting" etc.  In this article they talk about what is "fun". When I think of something "fun" I think about laughter, being happy, being active but from this reading I've learnt there is so many different types of ...

Gaming Elements That I Like.

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, in today's blog post I will be talking about Game Elements.  When I think about game elements I always think about player & rules but I never quite thought about the objectives behind it.  Players :  A game isn't a game without having at least one player right? You could even have 10 players if you wanted to. When I think of the game I would like to develop I would like it to 1-6 players, that means you could play it on your own or you could connect with other people and play the game together.  There is all different types of games that have different types of players such as: 1 player v's the computer system. These types of games are great especially when your testing your own mind. Examples of these types of game would be Solitaire, Piano Online, Hill Racing Cart, Mindsweeper etc. There is website online that has thousands of different 1 player games.  https://www.agame.com/games/singleplaye r Head-to...

What Is Game Design?? Haven't a Clue!

Hi guys, Welcome back to my blog! This evening I will be talking about game design. When I think about making my own game I sort of freak out a little as I have no idea what I am doing. I am not great at drawing and I am useless at directions so if I had to sit down and write out exactly how my game was suppose to go you'd probably laugh at how bad it would be! Anyway....  After I read the article I was interested to keep reading more of the articles that Shaun had linked for us. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever really consider game designers to be artist. When I think of artists I think of Leonardo Da Vinci and Vincent Van Gogh, not game designers!  From playing games myself especially now on my phone I think it is so important to make sure the game works, there is so many games out there that crash and have viruses so when making a game my one priority would to make sure that it was perfect before release.  When I think of playing games I think ...
