Game Stories

Morning Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be talking about game stories from two different articles I have read. The first article was called  Into The Woods: A Practical Guide To The Hero Journey.  By Bob Bates. In this article Bob Bates explains to us how a hero's journey is very important within a game as myths are important, he explains that myths convey the values of society, they teach us who we are and how we should behave, they are a guide for our actions, they aren't just dusty old books. Myths are influenced by Moral Values, Mysteries of Life and Death, Communities and Personal Identity. Bob goes on to explain that myths are wired into all of us, they drive humanity to carry on because without them we would easily fall into madness causing us to suffer from depression and other mental illnesses.  I found this article to be very interesting, I liked how he compared our myths to the myths within a game and he referenced lots of different books and a

Alpha

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be talking about Alpha within my game. This is going to be a quick blog post as I stupidly left my laptop charger in college and my laptop is slowly dying so I need to get this done asap! So the alpha within my game... I have no idea what that means.  Now that I have looked it up I know that is means features and elements that are finished. Unfortunately I am still slowly getting there with my game. I am still moving different things around but I have the Sky box complete and I am happy with how that looks. I have majority of my paths made for my trail. I still need to add the water and walls and different gems within my game but over all I am happy with my process.  I still have 2/3 weeks to complete my game so I don't want to rush it and I will have it finished by the deadline. After speaking to Shaun and explaining that my game will not be playable he gave me great advice to screen record my game and do a voice over

Week 9, My Process

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be talking about my process in this module.  Looking at the process chat and the email Shaun sent today I am extremely happy, I have done every blog post since September except for week 8's weekend work (the week got away from me and I was trying to catch up on myself!!🙈). For the amount of stressing I have already done this year I was happy to see that some of it was paying off. Don't get me wrong I sometimes feel like the stress is coming over me but when I see good results I feel like it is all worth it.  Back in September when I done my schedule for this module I was determined to stick to it but that wasn't the case, but the one thing I am proud of is I have gotten the work done in the end and my end result will show that. I do think the extra credit is a great idea but I have only done it once or twice and that is because of time but when I have a spare hour in the next 2 weeks I plan on doing some more.

Review Week 9 Comments & Feedback

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be talking about comments & feedback as it is review week! Looking over the comments I have been given from my fellow classmates they have been very helpful, they have given me suggestions which I have taken and put into action, they have also given me advice on there thoughts of my game and everyone seems excited to see my final product which in a way is good but also quite scary in case it all goes wrong and the game isn't even playable! 🙈 But overall I do think getting feedback from people whether it is good or bad is very important in this assignment process as I like to see peoples options on my game. The only thing I will say is sometimes when people give me feedback it is not very clear and can be quite confusing to understand where they are coming from with the comments they have made. But overall I am happy with everything else that people have commented on! https://uxplanet.org/real-world-vs-lab-feedback

Week 9 Reading & Writing

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, as it is week 9 of the semester we are now half way through - isn't that bloody crazy! Feels like is was only September yesterday 😓 but I am going to talk about how I think i'm getting on in this module so far while trying to juggle everything else this year keeps throwing at me! So here goes..... Overall I am really enjoying reading different articles, I haven't missed any of the readings yet as I have been trying my best to keep up to date with them. I have enjoyed some of them but being dyslexic reading is like my worst nightmare, I always have to read it twice to understand exactly whats the person is trying to explain so that is very time consuming but the one thing these readings have me doing is actually reading... I never read, I always put it off as I find it difficult so even though it takes some time I am enjoying it. The reading which I most enjoyed was probably one of the first readings I done in this module which wa

Free Unity Tutorials

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be telling you about the different unity tutorials I found online to help me with the process of making my game.  The first tutorial I looked at was  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqfrREmWvC0 , in this tutorial we learnt how to create a character in unity. I went looking for this tutorial first because in my game I need the player to make a character to play with. The tutorial is quite short but at the same time it gives you all the information that you need.  The second tutorial I looked at was  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdOFUFMiPDU , in this tutorial its all about how to make your character jump as in my game the player will need to make there character jump over certain objects to collect different gems to score points.  In the third tutorial I looked at, it was about how to create a island, now my game isn't on an island but it was good to know and understand how to add water and different features th

Game Fun! :)

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be talking about an article I read  http://mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm .  In this article I learnt about MUD, "MUD" is a multi player real-time virtual world that is text based. Mud combine five different elements such as hack and slash, player versus player, role playing game, online chat and interactive fiction. In this article I also learnt about the history of MUD and the different games that used MUD years ago.   In this article Richard Bartle divides players into four categories. The first category is  Achievers V Achievers:  What he means by this is achievers are very competitive, sometimes its in a friendly nature but it can be very cut throat. They want to master the game and take pride in their process.  The second category is Achievers V Explorers: Achievers tend to say that explorers are losers, they say this because some of these people tinker with the game mechanics because they ca

Growth Mindset -

Hi Guys, Like I said in my previous blog I'm doing some of the extra credit blogs today.  This blog is about Growth Mindset, I haven't done one of these blogs on this topic since the 1st week so its nice to recap every once and a while 😀 Reading the different links and thinking about it to myself, since school I was so focused on my leaving cert and getting into college I forgot about how I actually felt, how I was going to deal with this huge change in my life starting college, in September 2015 going into college was the scariest thing to face on my own, I was young and not very mature and I didn't have the right mindset to do something I have never done before and unfortunately I think that's why I ended up dropping out of that course.  Over the years from working full time I was also so focused on doing my job that once again I forgot about the impact is was having on my mind so when I began this course trying to juggle a job and college was so har

Tech Task - Blogger Profile

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, The next 2/3 blogs will be from the extra credit section, I have done any of these in a while but I have some time today and said I would do a few.  Anywaaaaaay...... Today i'm talking about  Bloggers Profile  which I found quite interesting.  What I found interesting is that I would have never thought making my blog profile personal, I learnt that yes it is up to us but if you want people to keep reading your blog than maybe they need to know a bit of background information on you.  Before writing this blog post I went into my profile and had a little look around and realized that there is so many different options on this blog site such as being able to put your location on each blog post, you can add a profile picture, your date of birth, maybe even your social media links which is really good especially if you go into the social media blogger platform.  https://www.sturgillorthodontics.com/12-lifestyle-bloggers-from-tenness

My Prototype!

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be talking and showing you my prototype for my game. After having a chat with Shaun I've decided to pull my game back to basics as I think I was trying to challenge myself to much and just ended up way to stressed which is not good! So just a quick recap - I wanted to make a Sims like game but now I'm thinking of making a game which is like a maze. So the character will have to follow different paths to collect gems which will boost their score.  The more I think about the whole gaming situation I honestly don't know why I thought I was going to be this amazing Game Designer over night and I was just putting way to much pressure on myself!  So now my PROTOTYPE! for my new game...... First off here is the map of my world, the character will start in the house in the middle of the island, it will then have to follow the trail going through different woodland areas, through mountain ranges and over small rivers to

Unity Tutorial 06 Workshop 1

Hi guys, Welcome back to my blog, today I will be speaking about Unity (again). This week I watched three different tutorials by Jimmy Vegas.  In the first tutorial we learnt how to download a skybox package which we can use to change the colour of the sky and other object within our game. I found this tool very useful as I will need this when making my own game soon. We also learnt how to add wind zone which I enjoyed as you need to have different sounds within a game, by adding this function you can control how the trees blow in the wind but you can also do the same for the grass which I think is pretty cool! (screenshot from my own unity after I added the wind zone) The second tutorial I watched as about how to pick up the weapon which in my game is an axe. I had a bit of difficultly with this as when I added my axe a couple of weeks ago it wouldn't exactly work correctly for me. So after a while of looking around at different things I finally got the axe to w

My Game Decisions

Hi Guys, Welcome back to my blog! Today I will be talking about  Lost Garden   In this article I learnt about MMO which is making a multiplayer game online. This article is very very detailed and took a while to read and know exactly what they were talking about. From this I got the understanding behind the process on making a multiplayer game. Each game that is made and sold on the market has to take into consideration about multiplayer as it can have technical issues. This article made me realize that maybe having a game that includes many different players is not always a positive. One main factor to multiplayer games is friendships. When playing games with friends you want to be on the same team or against one another. When forming a friendship there are 4 aspects which are important. They are Proximity, Similarity, Reciprocity and Disclosure. I've learnt that in games its important to understand these ingredients because without them the players will unlikely becom
